Verdalia continues to expand with the acquisition of a 90 GWh project in Toledo

The acquisition consolidates Verdalia’s presence in the Spanish biomethane industry and complements the existing portfolio of ~3 TWh/year of operational, under construction and under development plants in Spain and Italy.

Madrid, 15th July 2025 — Verdalia, a European biomethane company founded by Goldman Sachs Infrastructure Partners, has acquired a 90 GWh/year biomethane production project in Spain from Enerfree, a biomethane project developer led by Joaquín Mendiluce.
Construction of the plant will begin in the third quarter of this year, with biomethane expected to be injected into the grid in the fourth quarter of 2026. Once operational, the plant is expected to produce 90 GWh of biomethane per year by processing over 150,000 tonnes of agricultural and livestock waste annually.
This energy production is equivalent to the annual gas consumption of around 11,000 households in Spain. The recovery of this waste is also expected to prevent the emission of around 48,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year. There is potential for expansion, which is currently under evaluation by Verdalia.

The project has received all the necessary authorisations and licences for construction and operation, including an Integrated Environmental Authorisation and a Municipal Works Licence. It has also recently signed a contract with a European energy company to sell the biomethane produced during the ten years following commissioning.

This transaction marks a new milestone in the execution of Verdalia’s strategy. Verdalia’s portfolio includes seven operational plants and six under construction in Italy, as well as more than twenty-five in various stages of development in Spain.
